My First Bay Street VC Meeting

For years, I have been reading about the Bay Street investment bankers. Today I had my first introduction into their world, when I had a meeting with a downtown Venture Capital firm. Going into the meeting, I knew that at its current stage, HealthSpoke would not be a fit for them, but I figured that they might be able to help introduce me to others who were interested in investing in early stage companies. I was a little apprehensive, but it turned out to be a great experience. I received some positive comments and feedback on the business, and an offer to help make introductions as things move along! I also got to chat business with a very experienced deal-maker, and learn a little more about the world of private equity.

Interestingly, this whole meeting happened through networking. A friend of mine was taking a flight home from Halifax, and struck up a conversation with the woman sitting next to him. They got chatting about business, and she mentioned that she worked with some people in the financing business. My friend mentioned that he knew someone (that’d be me) who was working on a startup, she passed along contact info for the financing people, and next thing you know, I had a meeting booked.
